Revit was originally called Charles River Software and was founded in Newton, Massachusetts, on October 31, 1997, by Leoind Razi and Irwin Jungreis.

Leonid and Irwin were key developers of PTC’s Pro/Engineer software for mechanical design.

Revit was developed specifically with architecture in mind and was purpose-built for architects by architects.

The company was renamed Revit Technology Corporation in January 2000.

In 2002, Autodesk purchased a competing software called Revit, from Massachusetts-based Revit Technologies for $133 million.

With their Revit platform, Autodesk is a significant player in the BIM market together with Nemetschek (makers of ArchiCAD, AllPlan and Vectorworks), and Gehry Technologies with CATIA-based Digital Project.
